Before replacing the fluid with OneShot™, it’s essential to run your lava lamp for at least one month as recommended by the manufacturer. This ensures the wax stabilizes and the lamp is ready for restoration. Skipping this step may result in suboptimal performance of the lamp.

Ready to transform your modern lava lamp into a retro masterpiece? Let's get started!
What You'll Need:
- OneShot Tinker Kit (includes Modern Base Solution, Magic Surfactant, Up Adjuster, pipettes, "Do Not Drink" sticker)
- One Gallon of Distilled Water (Not Included)
- Modern lava lamp (see guide on dating your lamp here)
- Clean gloves (Not Included)
- Eye protection (Not Included)
Steps:
-
Prepare the OneShot Modern Base Solution:
- Pour out 1/2 cup of water from a gallon of distilled water.
- Pour the entire bottle of OneShot™ Modern Base Solution into the gallon.
- Shake your gallon for 60 seconds. It's important to blend the contents completely to ensure proper lamp flow. Alternatively, you can use a clean instrument to stir the jug.
-
Fill Your Lamp (Initial Fill):
- Fill your modern lamp with the prepared base solution, leaving about 1" of space at the top for future adjustments.
-
Add the starting amount of "Magic Surfactant" based on your lamp size:
- 20oz lamp: 0 ml
- 32oz lamp: 1ml
- 52oz lamp: 2ml
-
Heat and Observe:
- Turn on your lamp and wait for it to reach its ideal operating temperature (around 125º-135º F) You can ensure your lamp is fully heated by pointing an IR Temperature Gun at the top portion of the glass, or by waiting at least 4-5 hours.
- Observe the state of the wax. You'll likely encounter one of three scenarios:
Scenario 1: Wax is flowing nicely.
- Turn off the lamp and let it cool completely.
- Finish filling the lamp with the Modern Base Solution, leaving about a pinky-width of space between the metal top hat and the fluid level.
Scenario 2: Wax is dormant on the bottom or resting in a dome.
- Use the pipette to add 3ml of "Up Adjuster" into the globe.
- Wait a few minutes and observe. If the wax still needs help floating, continue adding Up Adjuster in small increments until the wax blob rises up to almost the top.
- If the wax flow becomes too spherical after this step, proceed to Scenario 3.
- If the wax collects at the top in an undesirable way, you may have added too much Up Adjuster. To remedy this, you can decrease the density of the fluid by adding the Modern Base Solution back to the globe.
- When happy with the flow, finish filling the lamp with the Modern Base Solution, leaving about a pinky-width of space between the metal top hat and the fluid level.
Scenario 3: Wax flow is too spherical.
- Add 0.5ml of "Magic Surfactant" to the globe and observe the results.
- Add more in 0.25ml-0.5ml increments, waiting a few minutes between each addition, until you achieve the desired flow.
- Stop adding Magic Surfactant if you notice excessive bubbles or if the lamp seems to have reached its limit.
- When happy with the flow, finish filling the lamp with the Modern Base Solution, leaving about a pinky-width of space between the metal top hat and the fluid level.
