OneShot™ Tinker Kit
Bring your modern lava lamp back to life—or make a lamp that doesn’t run well stretch and flow again—with the OneShot™ Tinker Kit, a complete solution for lava lamp repair, restoration, and tuning. Developed through hundreds of real-world restorations, this kit gives you precise, repeatable control over wax balance and flow, allowing you to correct common modern lamp issues without trial-and-error.
What the OneShot™ Tinker Kit Does
Modern lava lamps can arrive cloudy for a variety of reasons, or become cloudy over time with use. The OneShot™ Tinker Kit allows you to build custom, replaceable fluid for your lamp, helping maintain clarity, performance, and longevity for years to come.
What’s Included
Modern Base Solution
The foundation of every successful repair. This solution establishes the correct starting conditions for modern lava lamp wax, providing proper density, clarity, and long-term stability.
Magic Surfactant
The secret weapon for controlling flow. Magic Surfactant allows you to fine-tune how the wax stretches, separates, and snakes—transforming ball flow or boring movement into smooth, dynamic motion.
Up Adjuster
Up Adjuster increases the density of the master fluid, encouraging the wax to rise upward—hence the name. It is used when wax refuses to lift on its own, allowing you to correct lamps that remain dormant or unresponsive.

Lava Lamp Repair Instructions
The sections below contain step-by-step instructions for repairing your lava lamp using the OneShot™ Tinker Kit. Please read this section carefully before proceeding.
Important Preparation Notice
Before replacing the fluid with OneShot™, your lava lamp must be run for at least one month, as recommended by the manufacturer. This allows the wax to stabilize and ensures optimal repair results. Skipping this step may lead to suboptimal performance.
Safety Reminders
- Wear gloves and eye protection when tinkering
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Dispose of empty containers according to local regulations
- Attach the included “Do Not Drink” sticker to the gallon container
- Wash hands after you're done
What You’ll Need
- OneShot™ Tinker Kit (Modern Base Solution, Magic Surfactant, Up Adjuster, pipettes, “Do Not Drink” stickers)
- One gallon of distilled water (not included)
- Lamp made between 2003–2026 (not Grandes)
- Clean gloves (not included)
- Eye protection (not included)
- Bench bottle capper (optional, sold separately)
Preparing the Lamp
- Before draining the lamp, mark the original fluid level on the globe with a marker. This will help you refill it to the correct level later.
- Drain the lamp and pour the old fluid into an empty bottle or container. You may discard it in the trash or save it for later use if desired. If saving it, clearly label the container to avoid confusion. Do not pour wax or wax residue down any drain.
- Rinse the wax puck at the bottom of the globe under cold running water, drain again, and remove any debris left behind by the cloudy fluid.
- If wax is smeared or stuck to the glass, place the globe in a pot of water and gently heat the globe on low until the wax is molten and can be poured out. Temporarily remove the wax. Wash the empty globe and coil with hot water and dish soap, dry completely, then return the coil and pour the wax back in to reset the globe.
Preparing the Modern Base Solution
- Remove ½ cup of water from a gallon of distilled water.
- Add the entire bottle of OneShot™ Modern Base Solution.
- Stir thoroughly for a couple minutes until fully blended.
- Adhere the “Do Not Drink” stickers to the jug.
Initial Fill
- Fill your lamp with your freshly made Modern Base Solution, leaving approximately 1 inch of space below the previously marked fluid line to allow room for adjustments.
- Turn the lamp on and allow it to fully heat until the highest normal operating temperature is reached. Ideal temperatures are usually 125–135ºF.
- Once the lamp is fully heated, add 1 ml of Magic Surfactant and allow the lamp to “marinate” for a short period before proceeding.
Note: With the OneShot™ Tinker Kit, no Magic Surfactant is required during the initial fill. Surfactant is only added after the lamp is fully heated and evaluated for balance.
Balance Check
- Confirm the wax rises and falls freely without lingering at the top or bottom. If the wax stays on the bottom, add Up Adjuster in 3 ml increments until proper movement is achieved.
Improve Flow
- Once the lamp is balanced, add Magic Surfactant in 1 ml increments, waiting between additions, until the desired flow is achieved. Ideal flow is stable with stretch, drips, and snake-like tendrils.
Finish Lamp
- Once everything looks correct, turn the lamp off and allow it to cool completely. Top off the lamp with Modern Base Solution if needed, or remove excess fluid to return the level to the previously marked line.
- Reinstall the cap using a bench bottle capper (sold separately).
